Girls’ Football Festival
Our U16 and U13 girls’ football teams did The Abbey proud at this recent football festival with each student displaying exceptional talent with their football.
It was an extremely memorable day for them all with both the older girls and the new year 7s excelling with outstanding skills. Congratulations also to Beth who will be starting a coaching course in refereeing this half-term.
On Thursday 13th October, 13 Abbey school girls attended Strood leisure centre to take part in the Kent FA girl’s football festival. The day kicked off with a warm up involving 210 girls from schools all across Kent, followed by a day filled with fun football activities.
The sessions that ran throughout the day included skills and drills, interactive games, mini matches and a refereeing workshop. Also on offer was a range of innovative equipment, including an inflatable pitch, speed cage, target shoot, quick feet and batak boards.
The girls were treated to a couple of star guests for the day. One of the stars was Charlotte Lade, who is one of the world’s leading professional football freestylers, who throughout the day, demonstrated her amazing tricks and skills. The young athletes had the opportunity to meet the other star, Georgina Giddings from the Millwall Lionesses, to discuss life as a semi-professional footballer and the opportunities available to pursue women’s football.
Both our Under 16’s and Under 13’s girls’ football teams took part in a football tournament, where they played 4 other schools in Kent. The Under 16’s team won 3 out of their 4 games, in one of the games they sought revenge by beating a local school after losing to them previously in a school league game.
The Under 13’s girls’ team were equally as successful with their run of games, also winning 3 out of the 4 in total. One of which, they triumphed over another school beating them a whopping 17-0!!
This was not only the success of the day, Beth Dunkin was scouted, to attend a refereeing course, which she starts soon.
The football girls celebrated their day of success at the pamper station, where they had the opportunity to have their hair done and have the Abbey school logo painted on their face.
Overall the girls had a great day, and had so much fun! The day helped build the girls confidence and was a great opportunity for them to showcase their talent.
